The terrific show called “Bones”, based on the book and life of the forensic anthropologist, Kathy Reichs, has been released in September of 2005 by Fox – Television Shows. The show is based on the life and books of Kathleen Joan Reichs, more known as Kathy, who is the one of a few forensic anthropologists in the United States and also a bestselling novelist, which books is based on her own life experiences and knowledge. In the own words of the Executive Producer, Barry Josephson:
I´ve never seen a character on television before who was living one life but also inviting another. But I thought it was great cause when you´re a novelist and you´re inventing and you´re drawing apart a real life it takes your mind to different directions. And we thought that Kathy was such a fascinating person.
Forensic anthropology is the application of the science of physical anthropology and human osteology (the scientific study of bones) in a legal setting, most often in criminal cases where the victim’s remains are in the advanced stages of decomposition. A forensic anthropologist can also assist in the identification of deceased individuals whose remains are decomposed, burned, mutilated or otherwise unrecognizable. The adjective “forensic” refers to the application of this subfield of science to a court of law.
It was amazing about Kathy´s real life that she could tell if someone have been stabbed by the bones. Even the kind of knife has done it. If the body have been dismembered you could tell what brand of saw did it” – said the Series Creator, Hart Hanson.
I have had others offers to develop the books, the character into a film or TV. And no one was the right one and my agent always said ‘No, no, it isn´t the right one’. So when we had the offer from Fox my agent said ‘Yes, this is it. This is the one. We are going to do this one’. It was very exciting but also a little bit scary – comments Kathy Reichs – Forensic Anthropologist/Author.
The leading figure of the show is the character Temperance Brennan, who is a forensic anthropologist, interpreted by the terrific and gorgeous actress, Emily Deschanel, which interpretation is based on Kathy´s life and also on Kathy´s novelists. The Temperance´s book of the show is also a bestselling fiction, which protagonist is called Kathy Reichs. “The book really gave us the Temperance Brennan character. That was the most important thing. The book gave us the friend’s forensic anthropologist. The book gave us what she does and the variety of things that she does. And the people that she works with. The different kinds of cases she works on. So the books were very valiant”, said the Executive Producer, Barry Josephson.
The show had a big contribution of Kathy during the pilot and she still helps them in all the episodes ´cause all the scientific doubts are resolved with her. In her own words: “I´ve expressed my concerns about wanting to keep science honest we can and as closest to reality as possible. And they´ve expressed their interesting but also focusing more on the character´s show themselves. And they will be welcome to have my contribution on the scientific side of it. So I really was persuaded that it was going to work”. And also the doubts that Emily has about her character and the scientific side are resolved with her : “She is trying to get the science right, she is always asking me ‘can I sit down with you? Can I talk to you? Would she do this? Would she do that?’, she is really trying to get the science right”, said Kathy.
On Barry Josephson´s words:
She was really important during the pilot because when Hart was writing he checked with Kathy, we changed ideas about the character, what the anthropologist forensic would do in all kinds of situations Hart created in the script and we checked with Kathy. ‘Is this real? Is this right? Could she be here? She would be like that? Would she be here?’. And Kathy is just the one of 52 anthropologist forensic in the country, so you couldn´t go to someone better. So, yes, she has been a great consult, a great help, a great partner in this project.
In each Bones´s episode starts with body´s remains, usually bones, of an specific person that Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel), her FBI´s partner, agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), and all the lab´s squad of Jeffersonian Institute (Washigton) try to identify basing mostly on science. “The science is real. The science exists. Some of it is state-of-the-art technology. But everything we put in there has been based on truth”, said Kathy.
The most intrigant thing that Hart and I thought was that the crimes could be, you know, from 2 weeks old to 2 thousand years or beyond that. The forensic anthropologists are people who are called to identify what happened to a specific people or civilization, groups of people, genocide… The work that they do is so fascinating. So for me it was sort of endless histories and endless places you can take her. There were times when you could find a body in certain condition that you can think one thing but is completely another. Only she has the skill and knowledge to be able to discern that. So I think that it makes her a really fascinating character – explains Barry.
EMILY DESCHANEL AS TEMPERANCE BRENNAN
“We need three things for Temperance character. We need her to be beautiful, intelligent and funny. We interviewed a lot of good actors, terrific actors who had just two of those things but no one had all the three. And then I think Barry heard from a friend about Emily, he has seen her in something and said that she was someone he should look at. And she came in and in moments we knew ‘oh, thanks Goodness we had her’”, said Hart Hanson.
“We were so lucky to get Emily. She is so perfect for the part. She is smart. And I think that is the most important reason ´cause she is playing a smart woman and Emily is also, I think, pretty passionate about playing this part, that involves a woman who is really passionate to her work”, comments Kathy.
The forensic anthropologist, Temperance Brennan, which nickname is Bones (created by her partner, agent Booth), has a big connection with the science and reason, she don´t believe in psychology, in God and nether in others religion´s things, appearing being an cold but also an strong person, saying always what she thing, without thinking twice. On the other hand, Booth appears to be her complementary opposite, believing in his instincts and in God, having more sensibility than Bones. The Temperance´s characteristics are a reflection of her past: she´s been abandoned by her parents when she was only fifteen (believing that they have been killed), and then her brother also abandoned her. So she has to grow up in an orphanage. The fact of her profession choice is that no one has found the body´s remains of her parents. In an episode she finally found her mother´s body and also discovered that her father is actually alive.
In Emily´s words:
There are a lot of things in the project that attracted me. The script was smart, funny and the character was very rich. I mean, she is a very strong and smart woman, who doesn´t need a man who save her, she do her job very well. She has a Q.I. of a genius!
The Emily´s character is only based on the real Kathy and a little bit on the Temperance of the books, having more attributes than Kathy. “The TV´s ‘Tempe’ has a few skills that book´s ‘Tempe’ doesn’t have. She shoots a gun very well, she fights karate and others martial arts. A few of my colleges has send me e-mails saying “we don´t know that you carry a gun or knew judo. We are going to be more respectful when we are around you””, explains Kathy.
On the other side, Emily said:
I decided not to read the book before doing the pilot, because my character is based on Kathy Reichs herself, not in the book´s characters. During the pilot I ordered a few books about anthropology forensic, cases studies, references books that I have been reading since I got the part.
I´m getting an amazing knowledge of the human body, specially the skeleton. So it´s pretty cool! – Emily Deschanel
